The Situation for 17 March

Here is a revision to the document I did late last night. Good to see they finally were able to get spray trucks in finally. That will help.

My biggest worry right now is the disconnect between what the Chairman of the NRC said about the spent fuel pool in Unit 4 being dry versus the Japanese insistence that there is still water in it. Someone is lying or misinformed. Pray it is the NRC Chairman (though I am beginning to doubt that is the case).

The U.S. will NOT see enough radiation to cause any health problems. Don't waste money on KI tablets at excessive prices.

While we are bombarded with hysteria about radiation, it pays to view an alternative position, one that at least appears to have documentation associated with it.

Hi Michael, my comment may have incorrectly implied I was attributing some of the hysteria to your posts; nothing could be further from the truth.

I only added the link to Dr. Miller's column because it adds to the calm assessment you've offered of the Japanese disaster.

In the larger sense, I tire quickly of the scare-mongering of politicians, lobbyists, and their News Media megaphones whose purpose in life appears to be proving H.L. Mencken right in his observation of government (in general): "The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary."
